Many nature enthusiasts may be familiar with the Garden of the Gods park in Colorado Springs. However, fewer may realize that we here in Illinois have our own Garden of the Gods, located in the Shawnee National Forest. This area makes for a great road trip destinations for Illinois residents and visitors alike.
Interesting sandstone formations in this particular section of the Shawnee National Forest provide some of the most breathtaking views in all of the Prairie State. Located near these natural pieces of art is a hiking trail made of sandstone. Even at a leisurely pace, this trail can be completed in about an hour, offering incredible sights. Still, there are some steep grades throughout the trail, meaning you should bring along some hiking essentials for your walk, such as water to stay hydrated and snacks.
The Garden of the Gods also makes for an excellent camping trip. There are a total of 12 campsites located nearby with picnic areas to gather around. Plus, being able to witness these natural formations and the wilderness at night is an experience you won’t want to miss.
